From 15 Failed Businesses to Success As A Blogger

by Alan Young December 19, 2019

If you're struggling with your blog and need some inspiration, then I wrote this post for YOU.

I want to share my story with you about how I went from 15 failed businesses to a successful blogger.

And by success, I mean having the freedom to live life on my terms!

Oh and seriously I'm not joking about the 15 failed businesses!

And just so you know, success for me is having the FREEDOM to being able to work from home and earn a FULL-TIME living which is where I'm at now.

Freedom is priceless.

And yes I've definitely got plans to take my blogging to the next level. It will come in time.

But I am also happy with where I am right now.

Things haven't always been that way though. It hasn't been smooth sailing that's for sure.

If you're not where you want to be right now with your blog, and you are in need of some inspiration then this post could help you out.

So to get this story started I want to take you back to a time where I was a struggling entrepreneur trying to make any money online.

And believe me, I was struggling.

I Had Over 15 Failed Businesses

That's right.

Over 15 failed businesses both offline and online.

Here's just some of them:

  • Mobile fun casinos
  • Fitness boot camps
  • Selling supplements on eBay
  • Selling T-Shirts On T-Spring
  • Selling Warranties
  • Dropshipping
  • Selling Stop Smoking Products
  • Selling Cars
  • Copywriting business <—- Da f*!k was I thinking. I had no idea about copy 🤷‍♂️
  • Plus lots of other things!

I had a little success in some businesses but it would never last long.

One of the main reasons I struggled with most businesses (mainly the offline ones) is because I hated selling to people.

Whether it was selling my ideas, products or services I just couldn't sell face to face or over the phone, and that always created a problem in my businesses.

Thankfully that problem got solved.

I came across the online world and I realized working online was what I wanted to do.

I just need to work out how to make money.

It always looks so easy when other people are selling their products. I mean how hard can it be?

Well hard enough for me to spend the best part of 9 years dabbling on all sorts of online business ideas.

I had some success with eCommerce doing dropshipping but I decided it wasn't what I wanted to do.

I Really Wanted To Create Blogs.

It's something I've always been interested in because it's passive, i.e no running ads or fulfilling orders etc.

The problem was I had started many blogs but never really understood how to get traffic.

And without traffic, I couldn't make money.

Damn!

One time I even spent TWO YEARS building a blog called Online Super Ninja that had over 100 posts that barely got any traffic.

When I say hardly any traffic I mean it.

The most I got in a month was like 3'000 visits. And a chunk of that traffic came from a post I boosted on Facebook.

Terrible I know!

Here's an old archive screenshot of that website.

I even had 3 people from the Philippines working for me.

  • One as a full-time VA
  • One doing full-time SEO
  • One part-time on graphics

Even with their help, I couldn't get this site off the ground.

To be honest, looking back I can see I didn't have a clue what I was doing.

Truth is,

I Wish I Had Investing In Learning More

It's funny because I spent all that time on that blog, and I don't think I even bought one course on SEO or anything to do with blogging.

If I had learned from some experts I probably would have learned what do right, rather than guess my way through.

The closest to SEO training I had was a course called Google Snipper that I bought a few years before which showed how to set up niche sites and make money with affiliate marketing.

I never made any money with that course and by the time I started Online Super Ninja the course was outdated.

So anyway, to cut a long story short.

I had to throw in the towel on that blog after 2 years and 111 posts as I was about to run out of money. Meaning I couldn't afford to pay my staff anymore.

That was one of the lowest points for me.

And to make things worse I felt terrible because my fiancé was supporting the family.

I felt like a failure to her as a partner but I also to myself as an entrepreneur.

Honestly, I was so close to just giving up on my dream of making money online.

All I wanted was to be able to earn enough money to be able to work from home, pay my way and be in control of my own life with no boss to answer to.

My life could of went a few directions at that point.

Luckily it went the right way because…

By Chance, Something Amazing Happened…

I got involved in a local mastermind group for online marketers that happened to have two members who were successful bloggers.

I told them about the blog I had just spent two years on.

After a quick inspection, they knew STRAIGHT AWAY what I had been doing wrong.

They told me I had been targeting the WRONG keywords when writing my content.

Hmm oh dear.

I had been writing content for keywords that were way too broad AND way too competitive. This meant I had no chance of being shown on the Google search engine.

I was literally trying to rank for keywords like make money online or online marketing tips.

I thought if I paid someone to do SEO then I would eventually rank for those keywords.

It seems pretty silly now but I didn't know how unrealistic that was.

Anyway, they then told me…

I Needed To Find LOW COMPETITION Keywords That I Could Actually Rank For.

They told me…

“If you do this right, your blog posts will actually show up on Google. This is because there won't be any super established powerhouse blogs already ranking for the keywords you are targeting”

That made sense.

Something they also showed me was how to structure articles THE RIGHT WAY so Google LOVED them and wanted to show them.

Before that, I honestly didn't understand how to use headings on my posts.

I know it's crazy right?

Something they also said was…

“You should learn PINTEREST as it will kick start your blog's initial traffic while you wait for Google to rank your articles”

I honestly thought Pinterest was for crafts and recipes.

How wrong I was.

It has now gone on to be one of my BEST sources of traffic.

The last thing they said was…

“if you can reach 25k monthly sessions then you can apply to a premium ad network such as Mediavine which would then make you passive income from putting premium rate ads on your site!”

That seemed that a super-easy way to monetize a blog.

Creating email lists and funnels and all that stuff seemed too complicated for me at the time.

I found out that premium ad networks pay wayyy more than regular google Adsense ads.

Up 10-25x more!!!

At That Moment I Knew What I Had To Do.

The path to MAKING MONEY became a lot clearer.

Getting traffic to my site QUICKLY without wasting years doing the wrong things like I was doing before seem really doable.

Being with those guys in the mastermind helped me as I could see first hand what was WORKING for them.

So that day I set a plan to start a new blog (in a niche I actually enjoyed) and hit the 25,000 monthly sessions threshold so I could apply to Mediavine and make passive income by putting premium ads on my site.

So, I started by writing content EVERY DAY.

I then started using Pinterest to promote that content.

It took me a month or so to learn the ropes. But it was so worth it.

Then I started to also focus on writing SEO content for Google.

Quick tip: If you can write an SEO friendly article that is ALSO Pinterest sharable then that's double good!

Within a quick amount of time, I started to gain some traction.

Much more than with my Online Super Ninja blog.

But let me just cut to the best bit…

I Reached 25k Monthly Sessions In Just 4 Months!

Yep!

I was able to hit the 25k monthly session threshold and apply to Mediavine and I got accepted in just 4 months!

Just a few months later my monthly sessions doubled to 50k!

Finally, my blog started making money!

In the first month that I monetized my blog I earned $531.23 from the ads I put on my site.

Plus another $677.99 that month by simply linking to an affiliate offer.

That revenue has continued to grow since.

I also now have a few blogs that give me a few sources of income which is now over $3k a month.

I just did my first income report in which I've hit $3253.74 in income, obviously, there are expenses but it's still a massive achievement considering I spent years without making a penny online.

If you want to read that income report you can here: Income Report November 2019

So that's my journey from 15 failed businesses to finally making money as a blogger.

There's obviously more to this story but that's the simplified short version.

Just remember, plenty of people have struggled to make money with their blogs, and eventually, they made a success of it.

YOU can do the same!

If you want to learn more key strategies that allowed me to take my blog from just a FEW HUNDRED visitors to 25’000 monthly visitors in just FOUR months then join the Freedom Though Blogging Facebook group here.

Anyway, that's it for this post, feel free to share your story in the comments.

Thanks and speak soon.

Lessons From Spending 2 Years On A Failed Blog

by Alan Young December 6, 2019

Believe it or not, I once spent 2 years building a blog called Online Super Ninja that had roughly 111 articles that only managed to get at it's best 3000 visitors in a month.

And that was because I boosted some posts on Facebook.

Organic traffic was under 2000 monthly visitors which is TERRIBLE!

I also had three staff working for me to help build that site.

Yep that's right, three other people helping me on that site for two years and it STILL FAILED!

I remember the day I had to let them go as I couldn't afford to pay them anymore. That's a day I want to forget.

I just felt so bad, I just couldn't see what I was doing wrong.

I mean, I spent two years on this blog doing everything I thought I should be doing and I just wasn't getting any traffic.

Persistence is a good trait, but I should have stopped doing what I was doing a long time before I did eventually throw in the towel on that site.

So,

I've written this post to help other bloggers like you from making the same mistakes as I did.

The good news is, I now have a few successful blogs that I finally make a full time living from.

So thankfully it worked out alright in the end!

Knowing what I know now after building a few successful blogs and being able to look back on that failed blog I can see what I did wrong and share that with you.

So you ready?

Good, let's go…

5 Key Things I Did Wrong Which Lead To My Blog Failing.

1. Doing Keyword Research Worse Than A Noob

This one of the biggest things I probably did wrong.

I would use the Google keyword planner and find keywords there (this was when people used it for keyword research). I would simply find keywords to target based on search volume.

The higher the better I thought!

Then I would try to rank for those keywords by using hiring an SEO guy. As that's what they're for, right?

I would never think of targeting a keyword if it said only 50 searches per month.

NOPE, it had to be much higher.

How wrong I was, at least I've learned from my keyword research sins!

Nowadays I do actually target keywords that might only say 50 searches per month but in reality, they still get thousands of visitors each month.

I now know, just because a keyword tool says a low number for a specific search phrase, there are still tons of different ways to ask the same question.

….meaning you can still get all the traffic from all those search phrases combined as well.

So going back to the SEO guy, that's the next mistake I made.

2. Throwing Money At SEO

So like I said, back then my mentality was if I just pay an SEO guy (or gal) to do some SEO magic then they will be able to rank me for any keyword I want.

Just throw some money at it and hey I'll eventually rank.

Er no! DON'T DO THAT!

I was trying to rank for keywords like “make money online”.

Da f**k was I thinking!

I had NO CHANCE of ranking for a keyword like that.

I was a new blog with no authority and I thought I could just pay someone to do some SEO and I could rank for one of the most competitive keywords for making money online.

When I think about it, the person I hired to do the SEO should have told me not to even waste my time.

Anyway, my mistake for even trying to rank for keywords like that.

You're better saving your money and just doing better keyword research and finding low competition you can easily rank for.

Believe me, it all adds up in the end.

3. Not Doing Competitor Research

So the next mistake I did was to not evaluate the competition.

I don't even think I would check the top ten results.

I think I may have checked the article length for the top 3 or 4 articles just so I could write a longer article but that was about as good as it gets.

It just shows how little I knew back then.

Nowadays the biggest factor I check when doing competition analysis is how well the search query is being answered in the search results.

Domain strength and backlinks don't matter to me if the search query isn't being answered well.

I only care about domain strength or backlinks if the answer is being answered well.

Think about this, you may search “Best Vegan Keto Diet” and all the answers that come back are for “vegetarian keto diets”.

That might be because there are not any articles that specifically answer that question for a Vegan.

A keyword tool might tell you that it's a super hard keyword to rank for because all the top 10 domains are strong domains, but in reality, you could easily rank because you would write an article that would cover the topic as it was meant…as a “Vegan” keto diet.

See what I mean?

Anyway, I'll cover that more in another article.

4. Acting Like Mr. Know It All

I think in the whole two years on that blog I didn't invest in one blog training or SEO course.

I had bought plenty of making money online courses over the years but nothing truly on what I was doing which was blogging and SEO.

I did buy a course once called Google Snipper that did cover SEO but it was outdated by the time I was on my probably tenth blog (the one I spent two years on).

I really should have invested in up to date SEO/Blog training or coaching.

It would have saved me two years of doing the wrong things and also it would have saved me a ton of money.

Now I always stay up to date by investing in training because it saves me time and money in the long run.

Sometimes I may only learn one new thing, but that one thing is usually worth the investment.

It's funny to think I spent all that time on that blog without ever really learning from people who had achieved what I wanted (having a successful blog).

Next is,

5. Worrying Too Much About Logos And Stuff

Man I worried too much on the small stuff.

I had a part-time graphic designer making me all these fancy graphics for logos, post thumbnails, facebook images, and infographics etc.

I changed the logos and header multiple times.

I even got a caricature image of myself made as well 🤷‍♂️

You can see it in this old web archive image of my blog home page.

I really didn't need to do all that.

Here's a couple of old thumbnails from that blog that I found.

Yeah, they look alright but it's not needed.

Having nice graphics doesn't mean anything if no one is seeing it.

All that stuff was distracting me from working on what matters. Creating content.

All my blogs now have graphics that I make for free on Canva (including my logos 😀), I've now realized to worry about that stuff later when there's enough traffic to make money.

Till then, keep it simple.

A logo and free images from Canva or a royalty-free image site such as Unsplash is all you need in terms of website graphics, you can add a better logo later when you're getting traffic.

Don't get me wrong, you don't want cheap graphics that look like they were made with 90's clip art, but it's not as important as you think.

Work on content then improve the look of your site later.

I just use simple clean layout sites like this one now and I prefer it.

Now for that last point.

6. I Should Have Used Pinterest!

When I look back, this could have been the game-changer for that site.

One thing I know is, the content would have been perfect for Pinterest.

If I had of used Pinterest with the 111 articles that site had, there's no doubt I could have got hundreds on thousands of monthly visitors.

I just didn't understand Pinterest back then.

I thought it was just for people who like crafts etc.

That was a missed opportunity for sure.

Nevermind, lesson learned as I use Pinterest today and it's a fantastic source of traffic.

Well, that's it, I hope you don't make any of those mistakes I made as it will save you a ton of time and money.

How To Get Thousands Of Free Traffic From Pinterest – In Depth Guide

by Alan Young November 30, 2019

In this post, I'm going to show you how to use Pinterest to drive thousands of free visitors to your blog.

I'm excited because this is the same method that allowed me to take a blog from hardly any traffic, as you can see below, to 341 page views in December.

This is the time that I started to use this Pinterest strategy.

Within a month it had gone up to 6,000 page views.

The next month it traveled to 17,000 page views.

The month after that it went up to 26,000 page views.

Then to 60,000 page views in August and it has continued to climb since. This is a very powerful method that I'll show you.

Firstly, before we get into this…

What Is Pinterest And How Does It Work?

I thought I'd answer this with you now, in case you literally have no idea like myself when I first came across Pinterest.

So simply put,

Pinterest is a visual search engine with the human element.

To show you what that means, if you went onto Google and you typed in chicken recipes for slow cooker, you would just see a bunch of articles like this…

I'm sure that you would have definitely seen something like that before.

Just textbase results, sometimes they have an image, but that's how it looks.

When you go to Pinterest though, if you searched the same query, you're going to get visual representations of those articles.

So instead of having text-based articles, you're then going to have images that represent those articles.

And on Pinterest, they're just called pins.

As you can see, they are the images that represent the articles.

The next part is the human element.

Let me explain.

There are business and personal profiles.

Most people will have a personal profile, but either way, everyone will have some kind of a profile.

And then on each account, everyone has boards, and boards are just places where you can organize your blog posts (or articles that you like) and put them into relevant boards.

It's very simple.

As you can see, this account has different gardening boards for different types of gardening topics.

And then if you click onto a board, you will then see the actual pins (image representation) of the articles that appear on that board.

If I click onto the cold climate gardening board, for example, all the pins will be related to the topic of this board.

As shown here.

Some of these Pins may fall into another category of board as well.

Meaning they could be Pinned to multiple boards, which is good.

Lastly, if you actually clicked on one of these pins, you then go down to the final layer.

This is where you see the Pin details, such as the description of what the article is about, the number of re-pins it has, and the website that you're going to go to.

Also, this is the point where you can save the article to a specific board that you have.

If you click that, you're then going to go over to the site, that is really it.

So as you can see, the human element is people have their own profile and manually pin to their boards.

So not only do you have a profile for real people, but you then also have people going and pinning to different boards and sharing them all around Pinterest.

That is really what it is.

Pinterest, as you can see, is a visual search engine with a human element.

So the next thing you might be wondering is…

How Do People See Your Pins When You Pin To Pinterest.

Like how do people actually come across your pins in the first place?

There are TWO main ways.

1. Pinterest Feed

If you go onto your phone – most people will be using their phones, when they open up Pinterest, they will see the feed like this.

The Pinterest feed is a little like the Facebook feed.

You're going to see pins on your feed that other people have pinned on their own boards.

It's like when someone posts an image to their facebook, you still see it in your feed.

It's similar on Pinterest.

And that's whether that's their own content they've pinned to their boards or other people's content they've re-pinned to their own boards.

You will also see Pins that Pinterest shows in your feed but are not by anyone you follow. These will just be Pins related to the stuff you usually look at.

Pinterest is smart.

So if you usually look at Vegan related topics then you will see more Pins which are Vegan related.

This is whether you are following the users' profile of not.

Essentially, it's a mix of Pins from people you follow AND Pins from topics that you usually look at.

If you were to pin something to your board it may show up on someone else's feed that you don't know because it's related to the stuff they usually look at.

This is GOOD NEWS for you, as you want people seeing your pins.

The next way is they can actually just search using the search bar.

2. The Search Bar

You can use the search bar on a mobile or on a desktop. And when you search, you then get the related articles.

You want your pins to RANK HIGH so people click them when they do their search.

This is a search example on a desktop, but you can do that on a phone as well.

I hope that makes sense now.

Now I'm going to show you how to actually do this yourself.

How Do You Use Pinterest To Drive Insane Amounts Of Traffic To Your Blog?

With a bit of magic and a sprinkle of luck!

JOKING!

It's pretty straight forward.

Here's how…

1. Crease a Pinterest Business account.

The first thing you need to do is have a business account.

If you don't have one, then simply create one.

To do that, click here then follow the instructions.

Once you're set up and logged in, you're going to have the option to start filling some of this info in, which is located in the account settings:

  • The URL of your blog
  • Pinterest account name
  • A small bio

The first thing you're going to do is ADD YOUR URL and VERIFY it.

Just follow the Pinterest instructions.

You'll be able to do that in your account settings.

The second point is to add your Pinterest name. This is probably going to be your blog name.

In the example, the website is called a PaleoHacks.com, and that's their Pinterest account name.

Now here's some secret SEO tip 🙂

With the remaining space, you want to try and put in a few relevant keywords.

For the above example, they put paleo recipes, health and fitness tips.

Use that remaining space to put a few relevant keywords in.

The third thing is to add a description.

Make sure you use some nice and RELEVANT keywords.

In the example, they've put health advice, easy recipes, and functional workouts. Just relevant keywords to their blog.

Don't overthink it, just a nice simple description of what your blog is about and add some relevant keywords at the same time.

Congrats. That's the first bit done.

Now that you have your Pinterest business account and you've done this step, the next thing you need to do is create some boards.

2. Create Keyword Relevant Boards.

To start with, you need to create about 10 to 15 boards using relevant keywords as the board names.

You can add more boards as you go on, but just create 10 to 15 to get started.

If you feel you need more, then add more later, but don't create too many boards if you're not going to actually use them.

So start off with roughly 10 to 15, or whatever you feel you will be able to use.

Next, when creating your boards you need to use RELEVANT keywords for your board titles.

If you're unsure what keywords to use, just think of the broadest sense topics that your blog is about.

For example,

If your blog is about recipes you might have chicken recipes, and you might have pork recipes, and beef recipes etc.

Then those are going to be the broadest keywords for the topics.

We'll then create more niched down boards.

Obviously, a chicken recipe may still be classed as an easy chicken recipe or healthy chicken recipe or grilled chicken recipe.

This illustration shows what I mean.

Start off with the broadest keyword first.

Name your first boards after those broadest sense keywords.

Like the example above, you'd name the first board chicken recipes.

Then you'd think of the next narrowed down version of the keyword for that broad board.

Easy chicken recipes, healthy chicken recipes, grilled chicken recipes, crockpot chicken recipes, Thai chicken recipes…

Just whatever is relevant to YOUR BLOG

If you had a workouts blog, you could have a workout board, and then you could have high-intensity workouts board, then a cross country workouts board, gym workouts board, etc.

Hopefully, this makes sense.

Just narrow down from the broad board so you also have some narrowed down versions and name each board that keyword.

Once you have done that, you are then going to move on to the next step.

3. Add Keyword Rich Board Descriptions

You should now at this point have about 10 to 15 boards, give or take.

They'll be empty with no pins no board descriptions.

This step you need to go through and manually edit the board descriptions.

It's very simple to do.

You just need to make sure you add some keywords that are relevant to each board's topic.

In this example, this board is called chakra healing.

If you read that, it says articles and blog posts for chakra healing, chakra self-care, chakra book, chakra worksheet, self-care worksheet, opening chakras and balancing chakras.

As you can see, they're nice and relevant keywords.

That is what you want to do for your boards.

Just find some relevant keywords and add those as a description.

And I usually like to do something like this:

This board is about…[then just put the keywords].

Nice and simple.

When you have done that for each board, you should now have your main account page done. You should now have boards, and you should have keyword descriptions in those boards as I just showed you.

Next step.

4. Pin Other Peoples Content To Your Boards

The next step is to start a pining to your boards and get some board juice so Pinterest really understands what those boards are about.

What I like to do is start by pinning about 10 to 20 of OTHER PEOPLE'S pins to each new board.

And to do that, search each board's keyword in the search bar and pin the top content to your board.

For example, if your board was called Chakra healing then you would search that in the search bar and then pin some of those pins to your board.

And I don't pin them all in one day either.

Do about three to five pins each day to each board.

That's just to stop you looking spammy by pining 20 pins to 20 different boards in ONE day.

You don't want to do that.

You can divide it by morning and night if you want.

Maybe two or three in the morning, two or three in the night to each board if you want to do it that way.

But either way, three to five pins each day to hit about 10 to 20 pins on each new board.

Like I said, you want to search the board name into the search bar to get the pins that you're going to pin to your boards.

The reason to do this is that Pinterest is showing you these pins that are related to that keyword.

Like in the above example, you would type chakra healing into the search bar and then you would pin the pins from that search.

As you can see, those pins are obviously related to chakra healing.

If you pin those to your boards, Pinterest is going to know what your board is about.

You could also search for the keywords that you've used in a board description.

In the chakra healing example, we had the description and there were other keywords, you had chakra healing crystals, you could type in chakra healing crystals as well.

And pin some of those pins to the chakra healing board because that is still closely related to that board topic.

That is how you would do that.

So to clarify:

Just search each boards main keyword and maybe some of the keywords from the boards description and pin the RELEVANT pins to each board till you have about 10 to 20 pins of other people's pins done on each board.

That way Pinterest is then going to clearly understand what your board is about.

Once you've done that, it's time to move on and actually pin your own content to your boards.

5. Pin Your Own Content To Your Boards

Yay now the time to start sharing your content!

So to do that, choose the article you are going pin to Pinterest.

And just so you know, if you don't have a pin, I'm going to show you in a min where you can get these done.

So firstly, you need to create a pin and then pin it to your most relevant broad keyword board first.

For example, if you have a chicken recipe, which happens to be a grilled chicken recipe, you wouldn't pin it to your grilled chicken recipe board first.

You actually want to pin it to a chicken recipe board first.

The reason is, more people are going to search chicken recipe than grilled chicken recipe.

So you'll want a pin it to your board keyword board FIRST.

And remember this: Your first board is the MOST IMPORTANT.

Never pin it to some random board.

Pin it to your most relevant broad keyword board first because that is the most important.

And just so you know, you can create MULTIPLE pins for each article.

You don't have to create just one pin.

Actually, I recommend you create multiple pins for each article, or at least once you've pinned a pin to each board that you're going to pin it to, then create a new pin and then work your way back through those boards at some point.

And just so you know, it does take a little time to get traction.

You are new, you haven't got much history of Pinterest. So it's normal to be slow at first.

Just expect that.

I have a method to help you get more people to see your pins which we will cover in a minute.

If you want to know how to pin or add your pin to Pinterest – it's very simple.

On your desktop, you're going to see a red icon with the plus (+) sign. Click that and then click create the pin. You will then go and fill in the details.

Here's a completed example.

You'll add your image, your description, your headline, and your URL.

Again, use some RELEVANT keywords in this description and then a few hashtags with some more keywords in.

Maybe three to five keyword hashtags.

This will help with your Pinterest SEO.

Then once you do that, choose the board from the dropdown that you're going to pin to.

Congrats you've just pinned a pin to Pinterest!

Here are some quick recap tips.

  • Pin a new pin to your most relevant broad keyword board first
  • Your first board in the most important
  • Create multiple pins for each article
  • Takes a little time to get traction

Oh, and if you're wondering the time frame for pinning to boards, just pin each article to a new board each day until you've run out of relevant boards.

Then create a new pin and cycle through the boards a day (or a few days apart) at a time.

This goes for all your pins.

If you have 30 articles then mix it up, start pinning some articles on some days and some on other days.

Just don't keep pinning the same pin to the same board, day in and day out.

How To Create Pinterest Pins.

So I told you I would show you where to create pins.

Simply head over to Canva.com

It's free to use. And they have a section for creating Pinterest graphics.

They have many templates.

You can use their templates or you can start from scratch and just make your own.

Either way, it’s so easy to use.

If you get stuck, just Google how to create pins on Canva and you'll see some great tutorials.

Very simple and like I said, it's FREE!

So we are nearing to the end of this article. And I do have one more tip.

How To Get Some Quick Traction With Pinterest Boards.

This is great for getting access to thousands of other people's boards' followers.

It's so helpful, especially in your early days.

I do want to mention, this should NEVER be your only strategy.

Eventually, your OWN BOARDS will become your BEST BOARDS!

So to do this strategy you need to find group boards.

And the best way to do that is to go to the BIG PLAYERS in YOUR niche.

Put the keywords of your topic in the search bar and you'll see the big accounts with loads of followers and then go to their board list and search through their boards.

Quick tip: Make sure you are searching for “People” and not “All Pins”.

When searching the boards for each of the accounts you're looking at, you may come across boards with a circle of multiple profile images like in this example.

That is a group board.

Then just click on that board and it will take you down to the board level and you can see the information there.

Here's an example.

You can see it's full of great keywords as we said to do before. And also it has a way to join the board.

It says, if you'd like to join us, let us know the comments and we'll send you an invite.

And that is how you do it. Just Following the instructions.

Just so you know, there are many ways you could join a board.

Sometimes they have a request to join button, click that. Sometimes they put their email in the description, then email them and ask to join.

It's really that simple.

Just go for it, find those boards on other people's accounts with the circle, with the multiple profile images in, and then request to join them.

When you join a board you're going to get access to the followers of that board.

In the above example, there are 6,000 followers.

You're going to get access to those people and which is amazing, especially when you start off.

I do want to say again though, don't rely just on group boards.

Eventually, your boards will become your BEST boards and group boards will just be a part of the process.

You do want to focus mainly on YOUR BOARDS overall, and just use group boards as something extra to help get you some traction.

That’s it for this post.

What to do next? If you are not a member of the “Freedom Through Blogging” Facebook group then I invite you to head over to Facebook and join the group.

I'll see you there!

The 17 Pinterest Tips That Helped Me Rapidly Grow My Blog Traffic

by Alan Young February 21, 2019

I'm sure you'll agree with me that it's super frustrating to spend weeks if not months building a blog and creating tons of content but no one coming to view it.

You end up waiting.

And waiting,

And waiting some more to get visitors to your blog.

You know your blogs amazing. But no one's coming by to check it out.

It's frustrating that's for sure.

If you're waiting on Google to bring busloads of visitors to your site, you'll be waiting a long time.

My fiance and I created a new Law Of Attraction blog.

Then added 30 blog posts then played the waiting game.

Nothing. Nada.

Just the sound of crickets and tumbleweed blowing by.

No One Was Coming To Read Our (Amazing) Blog Posts.

5 months later still nothing, just with the odd visitor here and there, but it was nothing worth writing home about.

Something needed to be done, something different. Something with more imidate results.

Then by chance, I read a blog post about someone who built their blog to 100K+ visitors a month in just six short months.

Obviously, I was a bit skeptical considering I'd had hardly traffic in nearly 5 months to our new blog.

It turns out they were using Pinterest to drive traffic to their blog.

To my surprise, quite a lot of bloggers use Pinterest to get trucks loads of traffic to their sites and really quick.

Everyone except me that is.

After reading so many positive results with Pinterest I dived in head first and gave it a go.

I Was Blown Away At How Quick I Got Traffic To My Blog From Pinterest.

Within the first month of Using Pinterest, I got just over 16K unique pageviews to our Law Of Attraction blog.

The first visit was on September 14th.

It's crazy when you think I literally had hardly any traffic to my site from Google, then when I started using Pinterest, like a rocket, my traffic took off.

What's even better is, since I started getting traffic from Pinterest my posts are starting to rank on Google and I get about 75 organic views a day as well.

Pretty sweet ey?

As I write this I've just got past my first month using Pinterest and I can't believe I didn't use it sooner.

In this post, I show you the 17 tips that I used to help grow my blog traffic to 16K pageviews in the first month using Pinterest.

Before we get stuck in.

If you don't have a blog yet then I've created a simple walkthrough to set up your blog quickly.

It's the one thing all successful bloggers have in common.

They got started!

Click here to check out the blog set up guide. Remember it's the first step to building a profitable blog.

So, you ready? I hope so.

You're want to hear this.

17 Pinterest Tips That Helped Me Quickly Grow My Blogs Traffic.

1. Use A Business Account

So if you're using a personal account you'll need to switch to a Business account so you can see all the juicy analytics only available on a business Pinterest account.

Also, you'll be able to use promoted pins as well.

If you've got a personal account you can switch to a business account pretty easily, and if you haven't set one up yet then set up a business account straight of the bat.

Click here to Sign up to Pinterest business.

2. Add A Keyword Rich Profile Description.

When you set up your Pinterest business account you'll want to add keywords that are relevant to your business.

I don't know for a fact that it makes a difference but if there's a way I can possibly improve my Pinterest SEO, I'll take it.

Most people won't read the profile description anyway, but in case they do it's a good opportunity to tell people what you're about and use some good SEO keywords in the process.

3. Name Your Pinterest Boards Well.

When you create your Pinterest boards you don't wanna be getting all creative naming them something like “ideas to get stackin those papers real high”.

Just use the key terms people would search on Pinterest. Like “Make Money Ideas”

A good idea is a type in your broad term into the Pinterest search box, then click the suggestions box to see the related suggestions.

Then narrow it down again by clicking the suggestions.

This should give you ideas for a few board names.

For example, if you were doing rental apartment decoration, you can type the keyword “rental apartment decorating”,

Then narrow it down with the suggestions to “rental apartment decorating on a budget” and then even further to “rental apartment decorating on a budget living room”

Pinterest is giving you the ideas so you're going to be hitting good keywords for your boards when doing this.

You'll want to have multiple boards around the topic you write about. Start with the broadest term then add more niched down board names.

4. Add Keyword Rich Board Descriptions.

When you create your keyword rich boards you'll want to add descriptions with relevant keywords in the description.

This is also one of those things most people will never read so don't overly worry about making it sound amazing.

Just focus on adding relevant keywords.

Like you used for board names before you can use the Pinterest search bar to help find good Pinterest SEO keywords to put in your boards' description.

5. Claim Your Website.

Claiming your website will make you look all legit as you'll get one of those beautiful trust building ticks next to your domain name.

Also, it gives you extra analytics from pins pinned from your website.

You can also claim your Instagram, Etsy, or Youtube account which will give you deeper insights into how your Pins are performing.

6. Appy For Rich Pins.

Why are they Rich? Because they make you lotsa money!

Sorry I'm only joking, I wish that was true!

If you don't know what Rich Pins are, they basically allow you to add more context about an idea because they show extra information directly on a Pin.

There are four types of Rich Pins: app, product, recipe, and article.

Simply put, Rich Pins are good if you want to add extra info on your Pins.

Overall I think it's a good idea to add rich pins as it can make your pins look a bit more professional and stand out a little more.

7. Join Relevant Group Boards.

When you start using Pinterest you won't have too much presence as you'll be new and won't have any followers.

It will help to get some more exposure by joining some relevant group boards which will give you the chance to get your pins in front of some people following those boards.

When your boards start to gain followers and Pinterest knows what your boards are about, your pins will start being seen and it won't be as important to join group boards.

But till then it defo a good idea to do so.

When applying to group boards expect to apply to quite a few without a reply. It's a bit of a numbers game but it's worth it.

If you apply to 50 boards then expect to get accepted to about 10-15 boards.

That's just a rough idea but expect it to take a bit of effort to build that group board list.

Also, you need to be following the board you apply to join and they will need your Pinterest email plus your Pinterest account URL.

So make sure you send that when you apply.

And just so you know, the first profile is the owner of that board.

You'll want to click on that to open up their profile if you need to find their website to send them an email.

Quite often you'll need to click to their website and email them.

However, sometimes they put their email in the board description with some instructions on how to join.

Here are some tips on finding good boards to join.

8. Find Good Group Boards By Checking Out Similar Profiles Boards List.

A simple method to find group boards to join on Pinterest is to click on profiles that are in your niche then see what group boards they are a part of.

Follow the Pinterest accounts you like, then check out what boards they are on.

If they are on a group board then there's a good chance that they are posting on it.

Simply click on the board and follow the steps mentioned in the last tip to join them.

Just so you know, when checking a profile for group boards. The group boards are the ones with circles like the example below.

9. Use Pingroupie To Find More Relevant Boards.

Another good way to find boards is to use Pingroupie.

With Pingroupie you can search for relevant boards by typing in keywords that are relevant to your niche and it will bring up all the related group boards that you apply to join.

You also can see other info like the creator name, how many pins the board has, how many collaborators the board has and the number of followers the board has. It also show's average repins amount as well.

Click here to check out Pin Groupie. It's 100% Free.

10. Create High-Quality Eye-Catching Pins Using Canva.

With so many pins trying to get peoples attention, it's important to make your pins stand out from the crowd.

I've noticed that as I got better at creating high-quality pins my Pin engagement has been much higher.

Expect at first for your pins to suck, but as you keep creating new ones and finding your design grove then you'll naturally create better-looking pins.

A good tip is to create a secret board and save all the pins you like the look of to it.

Then use those pins as inspiration to create similar pins of your own.

Obviously, you don't want to straight up copy them but you'll get a good idea of what fonts you like and what type of background images look good.

Click here to sign up for Canva. It's also Free.

11. Create Nice Long Verticle Pins.

Pinterest says vertical pins with a 2:3 ratio are best.

For example 800x1200px or Canva's temple size or 735 x 1102px.

Just don't be creating some odd square shaped pins or Youtube thumbnail pins.

Just no!

Use nice verticle pins with a good image and popping text!

12. Add Keyword Filled Pin Descriptions.

When I first got start I didn't put much effort into the descriptions.

I know I was bit silly 🙁

It's all good now though, I gave myself some lashings. and I've now learned from my wicked ways. I now add keyword rich descriptions.

This helps your SEO as Pinterest needs as much info as they can to determine what your pin is about.

Like I've said before, anytime I get a chance to improve my SEO I'm gonna take it. And Pin description is defo one of those times.

Don't be lazy!

Write those keyword rich descriptions and you'll be thankful you did if you start getting ranked for some decent keywords on Pinterest.

13. Add Hashtags To Pin Descriptions

Another tip is to use the new Hashtag feature.

This feature hasn't been around too long so it's still early days.

But you can now add clickable Hashtags.

You might not see the full benefit of it now but it's worth doing. It's another way of someone being able to find your pins.

Something I've been doing is adding my Pinterest name as the first hashtag.

For example, when pinning for my LOA blog I would add #SubconsciousServant at the start of all my hashtags.

That way if someone clicks that hashtag they'll see all my pins.

14. Create Multiple Pins For Each Post.

When I first started I used to create just one pin for each post.

Initially, I thought I could get in trouble for pinning to the same URL on a board more than once.

I thought it would be classed as spammy or something.

Pinterest has said it sees new pins as new content even though it links to the same URL.

It's also good to see what type of pins work because you never know what's going to get picked up well with your audience.

Sometimes you make a pin which you love but it never really takes off, then the other version you created which you didn't think was that great goes viral?

I wish you could predict which ones will go viral but you can't.

So it's best to make a few versions and see what works.

I think it's best to create 3 or 4 versions of each pin at once then you've got those alternative versions ready to pins when you want.

If you have to keep going to Canva to create pins for old posts you can sometimes get lazy and not do it or you find it takes a lot of your time.

It's best to do it all in the same sitting as it's then done.

If you need to go back later and create new pins you can but it's worth it create 3 to 4 pins right of the bat.

You can pin your first pin to all the relevant boards over the first week, then next week you can do the same with the new pin, then the next week do the same again with the other pin and then see what works best.

Then just use the best pin in the future.

15. Be A Consistent Pinner.

This is MEGA important.

Pinterest loves consistency. You don't wanna be pinning all your pins on Monday then nothing for the rest of the week.

Your best to spread your pins over the week so you are pinning every day.

If you don't have new pins or new content to pin you can still pin other peoples content to your boards.

Just make sure you're consistent.

If you make it a habit to Pin every day you'll reap the rewards.

Being consistent is one thing I've done from the start.

It doesn't need to be hours each day. Just 30mins morning and late afternoon will do. Or whenever suits you, just make sure you do it every day.

If you think you'll struggle to be consistent every day then I recommend checking out this next tip.

16. Automate Your Pinning With Tailwind.

At first, I really enjoyed getting stuck in and pinning and repining every day. But after about a week the novelty wore off and it started to be a chore.

Thankfully I discovered Tailwind the Pinterest scheduler. It has helped me so much.

Tailwind is great if you want to save time scheduling to Pinterest. You can schedule posts at the best times for engagement and get other useful analytics.

Because I'm based in the UK and the best times to me post to Pinterest are usually late at night I struggle to be able to pin manually at those times.

I just set up a pin schedule and Pinterest pins to the boards I choose at the times that are best for my audience.

Tailwind offers a free plan as well to see if it's for you.

Click here to checkout Tailwind for free.

17. Take Advantage Of Tailwind Tribes.

This feature is sooooo useful. It's like group boards but much easier.

Tailwind tribes are like groups boards for Tailwind users.

You join tribes and post the pins you want to the tribes and other members can Pin your content.

As you can see my pins are being shared by other tribe members.

It's so easy for Tribe members to schedule your pin to multiple boards with just a few clicks.

All it takes is a Tailwind member with a good following to pin one of your pins for it to go viral.

Using Tailwind tribes is so much easier than reaching out to tons of people in the hope that they will let you join their group board.

You can join a bunch of Tailwind tribes and add your content for the members to share.

Obviously, you'll want to repin some of your other Tribe members content as it's only fair.

I like to go through each tribe and schedule some good pins to my boards.

I usually find when I do that I get a lot of reciprocal re-pin as well.

If you learn to make stunning pins then naturally people will want to pin your stuff.

Tailwind has amazing tutorial videos so make sure to watch them to fully understand how to make the most of this great Pinterest tool.

If you want to use Tailwind tribes then sign up for a free account here.

So there you go.

How To Write Great Blog Posts Quickly – 6 Steps To Writing Articles Faster

by Alan Young February 4, 2019

Want to be able to write a great blog post quicker and easier?

If you find yourself spending far too long writing an article that should only take an hour or 2 then stick around.

By the end of this article, you'll know how to craft a great 1000 word article in around 90mins or less.

So let's not waste any time and get stuck straight into it…

How to write a 1000 word article in under 90 minutes.

1. Use the Pomodoro technique

Before you get started you need to make sure you can work with super focus.

Something I that I find super helpful and which increases productivity is using something called the Pomodoro technique.

The Pomodoro technique is essentially working in 25-minute blocks with five minutes rest, every 4th Pomodoro round you then take a longer 15-25 minute break.

When you work in 25-minute chunks it's much easier to stay focused.

The 5-minute break gives you time to relax and refocus, ready to go again for another 25 minutes.

It's my secret weapon for powerful productivity.

If you use the Pomodoro Chrome Extension you'll stay focused and get much more done.

You can download the Chrome extension for free here and use it when you work.

Trust me you'll be happy you did.

If you're not using the Google browser, then use a timer on your phone and work in 25 min blocks with 5 mins rest.

You can check out my post on the Pomodoro method here:

Pomodoro method – The Secret Behind Powerful Productivity

2. Create the headers first.

The first thing you want to do when you're creating a piece of content is quickly jot down all the main points of the article.

For example, in this article, I wrote down all the headers before I wrote this post.

I had a quick think of all the steps involved in writing a 1000 word blog post in under 90 minutes.

Once I had done that I got ready to write the first draft of the article.

Next,

3. On the first draft never backspace. Not even once.

You must never backspace, not even once.

No backspacing in the first draft is the most essential part of being able to write a post quickly.

Your first draft WILL look like crap.

There will be tons of spelling mistakes and grammar errors and half started sentences which you decided to start again.

But don't worry you'll go back and edit it after the first draft.

What this does is allow you to write without stopping and starting which will keep you in your flow.

When you keep stopping to correct spellings and grammar plus restarting sentences you will lose your focus.

Just write uninterrupted with no backspacing whatsoever.

Not going back to edit will feel very unnatural but you will be amazed at how fast you can write the first draft.

Once you've done that, it's time to get started and right all those spelling wrongs 🙂

4. Go back and edit with Grammarly.

Instant Grammar Checker - Correct all grammar errors and enhance your writing.

After you've written your first draft you can now go back and edit your article for spelling and grammar mistakes.

You may also have a few half started sentences you want to delete.

This is totally normal and part of the process.

I highly recommend you use Grammarly to do this.

My first draft had tons of spelling and grammar mistakes which Grammarly showed me.

Here's some of what my article looked like before I edited with Grammarly.

Told you it looks terrible before editing 😬.

Grammarly also shows what the possible changes are supposed to be.

The whole editing process is sped up because I use Grammarly.

Click here to get Grammarly for free.

The free plan you get critical grammar and spelling checks.

I personally use the pro plan myself now as it has advanced checks for punctuation, grammar, context, and sentence structure.

Plus it checks for plagiarism.

The amount of spelling and grammar mistakes I make in the first draft is so much that I choose to use the pro version as it helps me more.

You might not be as bad as me though.

Free or paid it's up to you but they are both fantastic.

I just speed type the first draft with no backspacing and let out all my thoughts, then after I take ten minutes with Grammarly to fix all the problems.

Click here to get Grammarly for free.

5. Add images after the first draft.

Next, I would add the images to the post where necessary.

If you have sections with significant amounts of text, then those are good areas to add an image to break up the text.

Also if you've got something you want to highlight with examples then add those images where appropriate.

Only add the images after you've done your first draft and editing with Grammarly.

Otherwise, it will stop your flow which will slow down the time it takes to write your article.

Once you've added your images it's time for the last bit.

6. One last skim over.

Even though you've made your edits with Grammarly you may notice words that you didn't pick up.

Even though Grammarly is fantastic it still may miss a word that's spelled correctly but used incorrectly.

For example, you may have written super healthful instead of super helpful and it may not have got picked up.

Grammarly does pick up most of the words that may be used incorrectly,  but to make sure it's worth checking manually after.

Those are the small things you need to check for quickly. It's shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes.

Also when you skim over you might want to add something or move a sentence around etc.,

This shouldn't take you long either as you've got the main draft completed and all the spelling and grammar is correct.

It's much easier to see what you need to add or take away once you've done that first draft.

Now you've done that…

You're done.

Congratulations! You've just pumped out a great article in record time.

It's amazing how quickly you can write an article if you don't press backspace.

If you use this method then I guarantee you will be writing articles at least twice as fast as you would normally write them, if not more.

Summary.

Here's a quick summary of the points from this article.

1. Use the Pomodoro technique.

2. Create the headings first.

3. On the first draft never backspace, not even once.

4. Go back and edit with Grammarly

5. Add images after the first draft.

6. One last skim over to make any final changes.

So there you go!

Good luck and please comment below and let me know how quick you wrote your article in comparison to your normal time.

Speak soon. 😎

Also, while you're here.

If you would like to create your own money making blog then check out this post on how to set up a blog in 15 minutes or less.

13 Powerful Chrome Extensions That Every Blogger Must Have

by Alan Young January 18, 2019

When was the last time you had a dozen open tabs on your browser, or you forgot your password?

If you're like I was, then I'm sure it wasn't too long ago.

The good news is I've got 13 must have Chrome Extensions that once you use you'll wonder how you ever lived without them.

Buy the end of this article you'll have every Chrome Extention that a blogger needs, right at your disposal.

And to make it even better…

They can all be used free!

So without further ado…

13 Must-Have Chrome Extensions For Bloggers

1. Grammarly

Grammarly is an absolute miracle worker for me.

The number of spelling mistakes and grammar errors I make before I use Grammarly to edit my posts would blow your mind.

I have a strict rule when creating a post, and that is to not backspace (not even once) till I've written the first draft of an article.

Once I've done that I go back and edit the article, and Grammarly helps me massively as my article is usually an English teachers nightmare.

Get Grammarly here.

2. Pocket

Ever have your browser open with dozens of tabs because you've got articles you want to go back and check at some point?

Why am I even asking, if you're a blogger, then of course you do!

Pocket is a great little tool to save all the articles you want to go back and check later in one place.

When you see a great article you want to check later, you can simply save it to your pocket.

Then when you get round to it, you can check pocket to see all the articles you saved.

So helpful when saving articles that you want to use for inspiration later on.

Get Pocket here.

3. Keywords Everywhere

This is a great free SEO tool.

When you search a term in Google, Keywords Everywhere will tell you the search volume for that keyword and it will also show you a bunch of related keywords.

This is great when doing keyword research.

You can find new keywords with the recommended keywords and also the competition level to see how hard it'll be to rank.

Plus it helps to know roughly how many searches per month (if any) a keyword has.

Get Keywords Everywhere here.

4. Tailwind

This is great if you are using Pinterest to drive traffic to your blog.

It helps you schedule all your pins to all the boards you have.

It's such a time saver as manually pinning is so time-consuming.

There are some really cool features with Tailwind, like the Pin looping feature and Tribes (which are like group boards).

It's defo worth using if you are utilizing Pinterest traffic. It's got a free and paid version which are excellent.

Get Tailwind here.

5. ColorPick Eye Dropper

This is great if you work with Canva as sometimes you want to color match elements of the image you are creating.

Sometimes it can be really hard to get the exact color that you are trying to get.

With this tool, it's super easy.

You simply click the browser icon then hover your cursor over the color you want to know, then it'll tell you the color code.

Once you know that, you can put it into Canva and voila, you have an exact color match that you wanted.

Get ColorPick Eye Dropper here.

6. LastPass

I've just come across this and I love it.

LastPass, an award-winning password manager, which saves your passwords and gives you secure access from every computer and mobile device.

Just add the extension and you'll be able to easily log in to any site you have saved.

The good thing with this is,

You can have more complex passwords and different passwords for each site as you'll only need to remember one password – your LastPass master password.

I used to only have one password for all my logins as I would forget them otherwise.

Now I have multiple passwords which is much safer.

Get LastPass here.

7. Headings Map

This is another SEO tool that helps you see your Headings map.

Sometimes if you're doing keyword research and you've got an article you want to outrank, it's good to see their Header structure.

Also when you've written your draft, you can check your Headings make sense.

Sometimes when I check my heading structure it doesn't make sense so I'll go and change them quickly.

When you see it on the map it becomes much easier to see if it looks right or not.

Get Headings Map Here.

8. Word Counter Plus

When you're trying to find out if an article is worth trying to rank for and how much work it will take to beat it, the word count is one of the first things I look at.

If the article is 2100 words in the top spot of google for a specific keyword then I would try to write a better article at 2700 words.

This app literally just lets you know the word count and nothing else.

Simplicity at it's best!

Get Word Counter Plus here.

9. Mozbar

Again if you are doing keyword research and you're trying to work out the keyword difficulty then DA (domain authority) and PA (page authority) are key factors which will determine how difficult it will be to rank for a keyword.

When you use this chrome extension you'll see the DA and PA when checking google.

You can also get insights into Backlink analysis.

I only use the free version of this tool which is good enough for what most people need.

Get Mozbar here.

10. WhatFont – For font pairing

Have you ever came across a website that you loved their fonts?

I have, and I spent hours trying to work out what font they were using.

In fact, the fonts on this site I came across on another site and I loved them so much I decided to use them myself.

This tool helps you easily identify a font by hovering your cursor over the font you want to check.

You'll know instantly what it is and then you could try it out on your own blog.

Get WhatFont here.

11. SEO Quake

SEO Quake is the last SEO tool extension I show you (I promise).

This is a more all-round SEO tool that you can see a pages wordcount, keyword density, headings structure and more.

This is probably one of the better tools but you don't see all the info directly on the extension.

You need to click the Chrome Extention icon which then opens up a new page with all the info on.

I use this tool when I'm doing in-depth research.

Get SEO Quake here.

12. FireShot Lite

If you need to take a quick screenshot then have it automatically save to your device then this is the tool for you.

When creating this article I've added a bunch of screenshots that I took using Fireshot Lite.

Just click the icon, mark the area you want a screenshot of, then snap it. It's that simple.

When you just need to take a quick screenshot and save it to your computer then FireShot is your tool!

Get FireShot here.

13. Marinara: Pomodoro® Assistant

This is my secret weapon when it comes to powerful productivity.

Using the Pomodoro method when working helps you stay ultra-focused on the task you are doing.

You work in 25 minutes blocks with a 5 min break.

When I work like this,

I work with total focus on the task at hand.

When the timer beeps I take 5 mins away to relax and take my mind of the work then when the timer beeps again, I get straight back to working distraction free.

Every 4th timer you get a longer 15-minute break.

Once you start using the Pomodoro timer extension you'll wonder how you ever worked without it.

Get Marinara: Pomodoro® Assistant here.

So there you have it…

13 Chrome Extensions that I'm sure you'll wonder how did you ever live without them!

Know any more chrome extensions that bloggers will Love?

If so, leave a comment below and I might update this list with your recommendation.

How To Start A WordPress Blog With Blue Host

by Alan Young January 4, 2019

So you're going to start a blog!

First off, let me say congratulations.

This is your first step to being able to work from home and have the freedom to do what you choose.

The happiness I get from working at home is something I'll be eternally grateful for.

I wouldn't change it for the world.

Having a blog has allowed me to be able to make money each month like these.

As you can see this is recent earnings as of writing this Bluehost Wordpress setup guide.

Here's another screenshot of the commission from another offer I promote. You can see daily sales coming in.

This is something that I linked to from one post and it still makes me money. It's only small but it all adds up.

This one is again from just one piece of content. This is only a very small commission but it's stacking and growing each month.

Won't be long till it's closer to $200 a month.

This is another offer that I've created pieces of content for.

As you can see, it's not millionaire money but it's enough to work at home and have more freedom in my life.

To be able to take my son to school and pick him up each day is priceless and it's all down to having a blog and working from home.

This is not all the offers I promote either.

The possibilities are endless.

You can do the same.

Whatever it is you want to blog about, you can with a WordPress blog.

So anyway, I'm sure you want to just get stuck in and start your own blog.

What you're about to do will take about 15 mins and your first blog will be up and running.

In this step by step guide, we will be using Bluehost to host your domain and set up your WordPress.

Bluehost is one of the most affordable and trusted hosting companies.

Wordpress recommend Bluehost as the number one choice for hosting.

You also get your Domain for free with Bluehost.

And hosting is cheap, being as low as $3.95 a month.

It's super easy to set up as well because they offer one-click Wordpress install.

No installing WordPress through some complicated cPanel backend.

It's all super easy with Bluehost as you're about to find out.

So anyway, let's do this!

How To Start A WordPress Blog With Blue Host.

The first thing to do is…

Click here to choose your domain name.

You'll then see a page like this.

Bluehost hosting main page

Then click the green get started now button.

That will take you to a page to select your plan.

It's up to you what you want to go for. The basic plan should be perfect for you as you are just setting up your first blog.

You can always change or upgrade later if you need to.

Pick your Bluehost hosting plan

Choose Your Domain.

Once you've selected your plan it's time to choose your domain.

Click here to choose your domain name.

I presume you don't already own a domain, so put your domain name in the new domain box and click next.

Note: .Com domains are the most trusted and I would recommend you going for a .com if possible.

Also, make sure your name is congruent with what you talking about on your blog.

Don't call it makemoneymom.com if your site is going to be about chicken recipes.

Also if the domain you want isn't there then try a prefix or suffix.

Here are some suffix examples you can put on the end of a domain.

  • home
  • place
  • garden
  • site
  • spot
  • park
  • dome
  • bay
  • web
  • net
  • cave
  • base
  • heaven
  • portal
  • world
  • camp

So say you wanted topgaming.com but it wasn't available you could try topgamingspot.com.

Here are some prefix examples to put at the start of a domain.

  • the
  • my
  • i
  • me
  • we
  • you
  • e
  • daily
  • top
  • pro
  • best
  • super
  • ultra
  • all
  • simply
  • smart

Bluehost domain name You can check now to see if the domain you want is available.

Once you've put your domain in the left box you'll get taken the account information page like this.

Bluehost account information

Fill out those details then choose your package information.

If you want to get a better deal then choose 24 or 36 month option.

12 months is fine though, and that's you covered for the whole year then.

Also,

Uncheck the package extras as it will make it cheaper for you.

They aren't necessary.

You can always add them later if you want them.

Choose your hosting package

Then it's time to put your payment info in.

Note: If you want to use PayPal then click the see more payment options button.

Add payment info for Bluehost

Now you've done that you'll be prompted to create a password.

Create your password

Do that step. And write down your password so you don't forget it.

Step 2 password creation

Once you created your password you'll get the congratulations message.

Simply click the login button.

Login congratulations screen

I'm not sure if it makes a difference on this next step but it might worth verifying your Whois domain records quickly before you forget.

Keep your Bluehost tab open and open another tab and check your email.

You should have an email now that says something like…WHOIS Verification for yourdomainname.com

Just open that email and click the green Verify Your Email button.

That's it and your domain will be verified.

Next, carry on where you were.

Pick a Theme

You should now be on the pick a theme page after logging in.

Choose a theme that Bluehost provides for free.

And don't worry if you don't like any that much as you can always choose a different theme later on.

I'll go more into themes after the basic set up.

Choice of Wordpress themes with Bluehost

Once you've done that you'll see a screen with a blue button that says start building.

Click that button.

Wordpress installed

You should now see the welcome to WordPress page.

It asks you to choose business or personal.

Choose which one you want or choose I don't need help.

WP dashboard

Once you've done that, you should now see the Bluehost WordPress dashboard.

More Wordpress Theme Options

So, as I said before there's plenty of options when it comes to WordPress themes.

The Bluehost's ones are good but there's plenty more available which might be more suited for what you want.

Firstly you've got the free themes that you can access via the WordPress backend.

To find them you need to click the appearance tab, then themes tab.

Once you've done that, click the add new button.

You'll then come to a theme search page

This is where you'll be able to look through all the free themes that WordPress has available.

Some are good and some not so good but there's' plenty to choose from and they're free which is perfect if you're on a budget.

Simply search through using the features, popular, latest and favorites tab or you can search manually.

There's so many so you should be able to find something you like.

Any you like the look of simply hover your mouse over it then click preview.

If you like it then click the install button and activate it.

You must remember to activate the theme once you've install it as it won't be live otherwise.

Premium Themes

If you want something more special then you may want to buy a premium theme.

This theme, for example, is a premium theme I bought from Theme Forest.

This theme is called Soledad and it's my favorite theme as it's got soooo many customizable elements and features.

It also has dozens of amazing pre-built themes you can install.

Call it the theme with dozens of themes built in.

It really is powerful.

Theme forest is the place to go when looking for a Wordpress theme as they have so many to choose from.

Feel free to check them out if you want something a little nicer.

Uploading a theme manually

If you invest in a premium theme then it's pretty straight forward to install.

SImply head the themes page that you were just on then click upload theme.

Once you've clicked that you'll be prompted to choose a file for the theme you want to upload.

Simply click the choose file button and add the themes .ZIP folder.

Once the theme is uploaded make sure you click activate and then your theme will be installed and active.

Next, we have plugins.

Installing Wordpress Plugins

So, if you don't know what plugins are then let me explain.

So say you have your blog, and you wanted to add something like a social sharing bar.

Something like this social sharing plugin which is at the top and bottom of this post.

Then you would install a plugin which would do that.

For example,

The social sharing bar is called Social Warfare and to add it, you would get the plugin by downloading it form Social Warfare.

You would then upload it to your plugins area on your WordPress backend.

I would advise not to install too many plugins as it will slow down your site.

It's best to use only necessary plugins.

Here's a list of recommended free plugins (that I use).

  • Contact Form 7 – For adding a contact form to your Contact page
  • Easy Table of Contents – For adding a table of contents to your posts (good for SEO but not essential)
  • EWWW Image Optimizer – Increases your page speeds by way of image optimization
  • Google Analytics – Shows you all your website traffic stats
  • Lazy Load by WP Rocket – Helps speed up page loading times
  • Limit Login Attempts – A security plugins to stop multiple login attempts
  • Social Warfare (free or pro version) – Great for Pinterest users!
  • TinyMCE Advanced – Adds more font options when creating blog posts.
  • Wordfence Security – WordPress Firewall developed specifically for WordPress and blocks attackers
  • WP Fastest Cache – Helps speed up your site
  • Yoast SEO – Love this plugin, it's great for on page SEO

NOTE: Some themes require a few extra free plugins to be able to get the maximum functionality.

This is completely normal if the theme requires it.

Just don't go crazy adding loads of plugins that you don't really need.

The ones I mentioned above are all free (except the pro version of Social Warfare) and they can be found by searching the WordPress plugin database.

I'll show you how to do now.

To add a plugin simply click the Plugins tab then Add New on the sidebar on the WordPress backend.

You'll then get taken to the plugins area which you can then search for the plugins you want.

Like the plugins in the recommendation list I gave you.

then once you find the plugin you want, click install and then activate it.

If you have a plugin you've downloaded from somewhere else,

Like a premium plugin like Social Warfare for example, then you can add it manually by clicking upload plugin.

Then once you click Upload plugin you'll see the option to choose a file to upload.

This is where you upload the .ZIP file of the plugin you want to upload.

All plugins come in a .ZIP file so don't worry you don't need to convert any files.

Simply click choose file then select the plugin you want to install from your computer.

Then click install.

NOTE: Make sure you activate your plugins once you've installed them.

If you want to activate or deactivate any plugins just head to the “Installed Plugins” area.

That's where you can access all your plugins.

So now you've done that, you're good to go!

Congratulations! Give yourself a big pat on the back.

You now have your own piece of internet real estate.

Hosted with Bluehost and WordPress installed.

I suggest you have a look around and click all the side tabs on the left and see all the options and get to know your way around the WordPress backend.

At the minute your site will look pretty basic as it has no content.

So this is where the real work begins.

It's time to get working and creating some awesome blog content!

The Bloggers Guide To Keyword Research – Long Tail Pro Review

by Alan Young October 31, 2018

Keyword research is the first step to creating great content that gets found in the search engines. Here’s how to perform keyword research the right way with Long Tail Pro. Search engine optimization, traffic generation, blog traffic, keyword research for #seo #keywordresearch #keywords #seostrategy #blogseoI think you'll agree with me when I say…

Ranking for keywords that drive tons of traffic to your website can be hard work.

And it is for most people,

Because most people do it all wrong.

The thing is,

It doesn't have to be hard.

In fact,

Finding good keywords you can rank for can be easy,

In this bloggers guide to keyword research…

I’m going to show you how to find hot keywords that you can easily rank for using Long Tail Pro.

You will learn:

What features Long Tail Pro has.

And,

How to use each feature to find you hot long tail keywords.

So first things first.

Get your free Long Tail Pro trail here.

Intro into keyword research with Long Tail Pro

So the first thing I need to say is, if you think you’re going to be able to rank easily for very broad keywords then you’ve got little to no chance unless you own a super high domain authority site.

It doesn’t matter about going for broad keywords anyway as user intent can be a bit vague on seed keywords.

Think about this.

Do you know more about the person who types “podcast”

or

The person who types “podcast equipment?”

Obviously the latter.

The term “Podcast” has 1,500,000 global monthly searches, but those searches don’t really tell us about the person visiting your site.

However,

The term “podcast equipment” has just 8100 global monthly searches,

But that’s not a bad thing though.

It’s actually a good thing as you know a lot more about them.

You can tell they're interested in Podcasting equipment,

Meaning that most likely they want to start a podcast and want to buy some equipment to do that.

Because of that,

You can tailor products and offers to that person with a much higher conversion rate because they are super targeted.

You can target your message in the BEST way as you know EXACTLY what they want.

And the best thing is…

Long tail keywords are easier to rank for!

That’s where Long Tail Pro comes in handy. With this tool, you can find POWERFUL KEYWORDS that you can target with LOW COMPETITION,

That means,

You’ll be able to go for keywords with a higher chance of ranking for.

Think of all those blog posts that you won’t need to waste hours writing only to find no one ever sees them.

You'll know better than to go after a broad keyword which is nearly impossible to rank for.

That’s why you should target long tail keywords.

There’s less competition so you’ll have a much a higher chance of ranking and making money of those good keywords.

So let's get into the good stuff.

What features does Long Tail Pro have?

Long Tail Pro has some great features that you’re are going to love.

I’m going to list each feature and what it does then I’ll show you how to do proper keyword research with Long Tail Pro.

You’ll soon know why this is one of the best tools on the market.

So here’s the list of the Long Tail Pro Features.

– Rank Tracker

This feature is for tracking the status of the keywords you’re trying to rank for.

For example,

You have a blog with 25 posts in which you are trying to rank for certain keywords for each post.

With this feature, you can put all your keywords in and you’ll see where you rank for each keyword.

It’s that simple.

Keywords tracking in nice easy to see list

Perfect!

So let Me Show You…

How LTP rank tracker works

 Firstly,

You pick the URL you are tracking.

So if you domains called howtorankongoogle.com (i know so generic) then you put that in the URL input bar.

Depending on your plan you can track 2-1000 URLS.

Next,

You choose the keyword terms you want to monitor.

So say you had a bunch of keywords for which you wanted to rank for certain articles,

For example,

  • google keyword planner
  • what is seo
  • long tail pro
  • long tail seo
  • long tail keyword generator
  • short tail keywords
  • best keywords for blog traffic
  • how to find niche keywords
  • easy to rank keywords

You then just put the keywords into the keyword box.

NOTE: You can also create groups of keywords or any group that makes sense for you to track, or you can have them all in one list. It’s up to you.)

Once your keywords are in,

You can choose what search engine and what country you want to check the ranking for.

You can choose search results for either Google, Bing or Yahoo.

And nearly every country.

Once that’s done you just click add.

Then all your keywords for that domain will be getting tracked while you do nothing.

Once your keywords tracking status appears there are a few metrics you can see.

  • Location,
  • Rank for Yesterday
  • Rank for Last Week
  • Rank for Last Month
  • When it was last Updated
  • When’s the Next Update
  • Plus Notes

It’s all pretty straightforward.

You’ll see where your keyword currently ranks,

And where it’s ranked in the previous day, week and month.

That way you’ll be able to see if it’s improving or declining.

Also,

You can make notes next to each keyword you’re tracking.

For example, you might want to put a note next to a keyword that’s ranking 10th to do some link building to try get it to rank higher.

Lastly,

You can see the big picture for how all your keywords are ranking for your project (URL).

You’ll see how many are ranking in positions 1-10,11-20,21-30 etc

It’s a nice quick way to see how your domains keywords are doing overall.

Quite a cool feature don’t you think?

So next is,

Long Tail Pro's keyword research tool

Get your free Long Tail Pro trail here.

This is the meat and bones of this keyword tool.

You can see and do a lot as I’ll show you.

Firstly,

I’m going to give you a rundown of all the features for the Long Tail Pro keyword tool.

Then I’ll show you WHAT the keyword research tool can do and HOW to do it.

After this section, I’ll go from start to finish the process of finding a hot list of keywords you start working on now.

Here are the keyword research tool features

 – Google Adwords suggestions

With this feature you enter your seed keyword, which is the broadest sense of your keyword which you’re thinking of targeting.

For example,

A seed keyword could be “Internet marketing”,

But it wouldn’t be “how to make money online with internet marketing”.

So basically,

A seed keyword is just one or two words max, a very broad generic term.

Once you’ve got your seed word/words then you can pick how many suggestions per keyword.

You can pick to see 1-400 suggested keywords.

Usually, 20-40 per keywords is a good amount.

Then,

You click receive and you’ll see the results in the columns below.

That’s when these other features come to use.

 – Average Keyword Competitiveness (Avg KC)

It pretty much explains itself.

This metric shows you how competitive each keyword phrase is.

This feature ranks each keyword form 0-100 on the chances of it ranking on the first page of google.

It uses a few factors to calculate this.

It’s all rocket science to me but they say they work it out like this.

This metric is calculated using the page title, Majestic Trust Flow and Citation Flow, links, site age, and other factors of the top 10 results found in Google for the keyword. Higher number indicate a higher level of keyword difficulty

They even tell you based on the strength of your domain what KC scores you should be able to rank for.

Those keyword scores are in green or yellow so you know you have a high chance to rank.

Next feature is…

 – Keyword Volume

No need to explain this one,

Next to the AVG. KC you’ll see the average times per month that people have searched for those exact keywords.

This is the volume for the country and search engine you’re looking at.

It’s worked out over a 12 month period then averaged evenly.

Next feature is,

 – Competition

This simply indicates via a value of Low, Medium, or High the number of advertisers for each keyword.

This is relative to all the keywords across Google for the location and Search Network targeting that you’ve selected.

 – Competition Analysis

You can check and see a more detailed competition analysis.

You simply click on the keyword you want to see the analysis for then a new page will be opened.

You’ll be able to see.

  • Search Result Title and URL,
  • Keyword Competitiveness
  • Domain Keyword Competitiveness
  • Trust Flow
  • Citation Flow
  • Domain Trust Flow
  • Domain Citation Flow
  • External Backlinks
  • Page Ref Domains
  • Root Ref Domains
  • Indexed URLs

You can see each domain that’s ranking for the keyword you’re thinking of targeting and you can see the metrics that will help you see how to rank better than them.

You can just go of the KC score on the keyword suggestions page.

That is a score based on all the factors above.

There you have it,

Some POWERFUL FEATURES that will HELP YOU when targeting keywords for your blog.

I hope you're getting some value out of this Long Tail Pro Review 🙂

Now I’m going to show you step by step…

How to do keyword research with Long Tail Pro?

Get your free Long Tail Pro trail here.

If you follow me along you should be able to find some pretty juicy long tail keywords with low competition.

So let's do this.

Step 1: Keyword brainstorming

Do some keyword brainstorming to get some good seed words.

If your niche is knitting then brainstorm all the 1 and 2 broad term words and write them down.

An example would be this,

Knitting
knitting basics
knitting video
Knitting types
knitting scarf
knitting history
knitting crochet
Beginners Knitting
knitting definition

Pro tip: Do a quick keyword search on google and you’ll see a bunch of related keywords.

Step 2: Generate more keywords

Once you have your list of seed words then you’ll want to get more keywords.

But before you do anything,

Make sure to add your domain so you can see the average KC score you can go after.

New domains will typically be much lower than an aged domain with lots of backlinks.

So make sure you add your domain so you have an accurate estimate of what KC score you can aim to beat.

Once you’ve done that,

Put 5 seed words at a time into the seed keywords box.

Choose how many suggestions you want to get for each keyword.

Then hit retrieve.

You’ll now see a nice long list of suggested keywords.

Then sort from lowest to highest KC score.

From this alone, you can see a bunch of great keywords that you can target.

Then look for the highest volume keywords in your KC range and also look for keywords with good intent,

An example of good intent keywords would be,

Best knitting course,
Cheap knitting course
Learn how to knit
Etc..

Then you just decide what you could write an article about.

However, if you want brownie points, then

Take your keyword research deeper still

You can go a step deeper and click on the +20 icon and get 20 more suggestions from the suggested keyword.

For example, you can click on Knitting Patterns and get 20 more keywords around that.

Now you got some extra keywords in your KC range you might not have seen.

Like,

modern knitting patterns
hand knitting patterns
types of knitting patterns
lace knitting patterns
aran knitting patterns
chunky knitting patterns

It’s so good, isn’t it?

Then next is…

Step 3: Evaluate the keywords

 This is pretty simple.

You want to go through and favorite all your best looking keywords.

To do this,

Simply click the star to the left of the keyword then it will be stored as a favorite.Once you’ve picked all the ones you liked.

Click filter at the top of the keyword column,

Then include only favorites.

Now you will have a list of just your good keywords.

And remember,

Only favorite keywords that are worth going for,

i.e ones with a Green KC score (and some yellow) and also have a search volume you are happy with.

Then go through and click on each keyword and see the Competition Analysis

I would then click on each URL and see the content for each article in the top 5 results, 3 at a minimum.

Then have a look and ask yourself can I do a better job.

Can I create an epic piece that will smash this out of the park?

If you’re prepared to write a better and a little longer post then I would say the keyword is worth adding to your list of articles you’re going to create.

Keep doing this process and within a short time, you’ll have a list of killer keywords to target!

Step 4: Create epic content!

You can have all the greatest keywords in the world worth targeting but if you’re going to write poor content then what's the point.

You want to be better in every way.

  • Create a more in-depth article
  • Make it easier to read
  • Include better information
  • Have a great call to action at the end

It’s not complicated,

It just takes a bit of effort.

To help you, as a little bonus to this Long Tail Pro review I’ll share a few tips for creating epic content that has a good chance to rank in the top 10 of Google.

Get your free Long Tail Pro trail here.

4 Tips For Creating Epic Content

1. Create amazing headlines

This is so underrated but it’s got to be one of the most important parts of writing a great piece of content.

If no one clicks to see your post then all those hours you spend crafting that great post will have been in vain.

You need to put some serious thought into your headline. Some suggest you spend as much on your headline as writing your content.

I would say the that's a little OTT but still,

You should give it a good chunk of time.

Don’t underestimate the power of this step. If your article is say 3rd or 4th but it’s getting clicked more than position 1 and 2 then it will most likely move up providing your content is good.

To help you out,

Here are 74 headline templates to get you started,

Next,

2. Create a great hook

So you’ve done the first bit right,

You’ve got people to click your article over theirs.

Next, you need to hook them in to read the article.

But just because you got people to read and click your headline, it doesn’t mean your job is done.

There’s a great analogy from the renowned copywriter Joe Sugarman.

He said..

Your sales letter needs to be like a slippery
slide at a playground covered with grease.

Your reader gets on and slides all the way down to the bottom without any resistance.

The same applies to blog posts.

Once they start you want them to smoothly go through your post to the bottom with no resistance.

To start that process,

You need to get them to read the first paragraph by hooking them in.

I recommend you use “The APP Method”.

Here’s what it looks like.

As you can see APP stands for Agree, Promise and Preview.

Let's break it down for you to see in action:

First, you need to get them to agree.

You can do that by stating an idea or concept that you know your reader will nod in agreement to.

That way they know you understand them.

I used that to start this Long Tail Pro Review post.

Now they’re agreeing with you, you make them a promise.

This is where you show them that there’s a better way to their problem.

Here’s how I did it in this post.

Then lastly you hit them with a preview.

Just get straight to the point and show them what you've got in store for them in your post.

You’ll now have them hoooked and heading down the greased chute!

Next,

3. Make your article scannable

You might have noticed that this article is scannable.

It’s broken up with plenty of headlines and subheadlines and some bullet points as well.

After someone clicks on your article and then reads the hook they usually scan the rest of the article quickly.

After that, they make the decision to read the article or not.

You want to give an outline of the story in the headers and sub-headers.

If you do a good job at the that then your reader will know what's in the article and will WANT to read it all.

Also,

Keep your sentences short and punchier if possible.

Scannable content is more pleasing on the eye and looks easy to read.

You’ve done everything right up to this point.

You’ve got a powerful attention-grabbing headline.

You’ve got a gripping hook.

You’ve made your article a scannable masterpiece.

If you have a discount for the product you just reviewed then TELL THEM.
